Hi Madelyn, I so love Bois Des Iles too, it's so beautiful. I didn't learn any languages on my trip, everyone spoke English everywhere I went. I had purchased some Dutch tapes before I left, but I never got around to listening to them.
It's hard for me to pick a favorite city, but Cologne comes close. Maybe it's my German heritage. :O)
