Vintage Violet - Ava Luxe

My very first thought was violet tea! I’ve been on a rose tea kick lately; I guess that’s why. Not sure if there is such a thing as violet tea, or for that matter, what note in this makes me think of tea. Very, very quickly the composition changes into what I would call a dusty violet where the violet mingles with the amber. Not really powdery, more creamy. Then the creaminess is joined by the indolic note that dries down musky. At this point I’m not even sure the violet is still there, it is more heliotrope.

Here are the notes from the Ava Luxe site: “A dreamy bouquet of soft-sweet antique violets. Top notes are lightly green with a delicious powdery feeling. The violets are accented by base notes of crystalline amber and gaiac wood. Key Notes: antique violets, heliotrope, crystalline amber, gaiac wood, hyacinth, and animalic notes."

You might enjoy this if you like a creamy, animalic, musky, close to the skin scent, that opens with violet. Violet lovers looking for violets will be disappointed.

Acqua e Zucchero - Profumum Durante Roma

Ok, here's the scoop. Yes, I know, inquiring minds want to know! Acqua e Zucchero has been a tough one for me to figure out. So I was hoping to get a better impression. Beautifully crafted and well blended to the point the notes are hard to pick out. The site says the notes are: Fruitti Rossi, Orange Blossom, Vanilla. But I smell a sophisticated marine opening note. Not your typical marine note, but as if the sea and air and salt accords have been rolled into one. I don't get red fruit, or orange blossom and not even distinct vanilla. I am anxious to try more from this line and will keep you informed when I do.

Citta di Kyoto - Santa Maria Novella

Ok, wow, I guess I got your attention today!
Now, I naively thought I was going to be the first to review this fragrance since it’s not released here in the states. But, it seems some other savvy Bloggers have beat me to it …Again. :O)

But here goes – My friend’s boyfriend brought this back for her from Madrid, but it seems to be widely available in Paris too. But I understand it is limited edition. I wish I could have taken a picture of the bottle for you. It is a special label, with a Japanese theme. I just got off the phone with Lafco’s LA store, they said it could be in any time, but I couldn’t pin them down further, but they took my number.

Now to the good stuff how it smells – it’s very lovely. It’s a soft, dry, woody incense inspired by Japanese temple incense. There is a very light medicinal opening note that may be camphorwood. I am guessing the other notes to be: sandalwood, cinnamon, cardamom, benzoin and Patchouli. I am taking a leap here and suggesting they may have also included aloeswood (Aquilaria agollocha), a fragrant wood used in Kyoto Incense. However it is on a protected species list and may not be available for harvesting.

This is one you might expect to find in the CdG Incense line, but I didn’t fall for any of those. Something in the drydown also brings to mind Bond’s Chinatown, which when you think about it is not that off-base. The base notes for Chinatown are: Patchouli, Cedarwood, Vanilla, Sandalwood, Cardamom and Guaiac Wood.

If you wanted to love L'air du désert marocain, but found it too dry, you will be happy with this one, a little sweeter, more feminine, more wearable. And it does seem to be longer lasting than other SMN scents. Now all we have to do is WAIT …Again.

Hanae Mori for me today. I have layered it with some strawberry cream to really amplify the strawberry note. I prefer the EDT to the EDP in this scent because of this delicious strawberry note!

Hanae Mori Pink Butterfly or EDT, was created by Hanae Mori in 1995. Notes are: strawberry, blackberry, jasmine, rosewood, black currant, rose, bilberry and sandalwood.

Jasmin de Nuit - The Different Company

Ok, twice within a month I have fallen in love. It's not that I am fickle. I am still so very much in love with my Le Maroc, but alas like a sailor gone to sea, it is not within my grasp. So in the meantime I have taken another lover to my bed; Jasmin de Nuit.

My friend Dawn describes this one as sultry. I would agree it is sultry and sexy on the drydown, but it starts out resembling a crystaline musk. Powdery, sweet and musky. The sandalwood amber base is soft and sweet and rises to surround the floral notes. Just a hint of soft spice, leans this towards the soft oriental category.

This one is a very sweet floral that I wager can be loved by those who previously thought they couldn't wear jasmine. While some may balk at the price, remember this is 3oz. The bottle is just lovely with its heft and silvertone screw top, it makes its presence known.

Jasmin de Nuit was created by Celine Ellena and the notes are: Egyptian jasmin, amber, black currant, star anis, spices, cinammon, cardamom & sandalwood.

Le Maroc Pour Elle - Tauer Perfumes

My new love, my latest passion, is this hauntingly beautiful fragrance from Tauer Perfumes - Zurich, Switzerland. This time I surprised even myself. The first time I tried this scent, I thought wow, such a medicinal opening, I don't like that. After being turned off by many medicinal type scents it was a knee jerk reaction. But wait, the next time I tried it knowing the opening was there, my reaction was different. Humm, I do kinda like this after all. It is unique, interesting, inviting. I set my sample aside for further testing.

Lying in bed a few nights ago, I suddenly crave this. I jump out of bed and go retrieve my sample. Yes, it's comforting now, smooth and velvety. And now my nose is stuck to my arm. In fact, I can't get enough.

The Moroccan (Maghreb) Rose and Atlas cedarwood are from the region know as Maghreb. Encyclopedia.com describes Maghreb as an Arabic term for NW Africa. It is generally applied to all of Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia but actually pertains only to the area of the three countries between the high ranges of the Atlas Mts. and the Mediterranean Sea. It is from this region these precious oils are produced.

I don't know how many of you watch the TV show The Office. I only catch it now and again. Last week I heard the perfect line. You know, a line that just sums up the whole situation without having to explain it all? Just beautifully perfect on so many levels.

The receptionist on the show, Pam says, "We get 80 hours vacation every year. I usually try to wait to take it as late as I can. This year I made it to the third week in January."

Now you understand how I feel about my job.
