Chypre Rouge - Serge Lutens - Review

The newest Serge Lutens is Chypre Rouge by perfumer Christopher Sheldrake. I have tried this one six maybe seven times now, trying to get past the opening, or change my perception of the opening so my mind can evaluate the notes. But alas it is not going to happen.

The opening is a strong woody-peppery blast that leans toward the dreaded celery effect.

There are some beautiful notes under there, barely perceptible, smothered by the heavy celery wood note. I love the honeyed sweet notes that linger on the skin hours after the top notes burn off - a honeyed incense, sandalwood with a fruity tone. But by the time they arrive, it is a skin scent barely there, just a sweet remembrance of what could have been.

Die hard Serge Lutens fans will undoubtedly love it. The name is romantic, the composition complex and dense.

Hi Victoria
I'm wearing Fifi EDP today, which I find is much better on my skin than the EDT. I would love to sample Chypre Rouge, SL is always a big yes or a big no, nothing in-between. Is this avail in the states already?

Hi Trinity, I love Fifi! Chypre Rouge will be coming soon to the USA, but my sample came from a friend who went to Paris.

I think I read somewhere it's due for US release sometime in Aug. Does it remind you of any other SL? I have seen comparisons to Arabie and Chene on MUA.

Hi Vic,

It sure sounds interesting but I guessing this is one that won't be for me. Celery? I wouldn't be able to get past the celery note.

And Trinity.....
Good point about the SL line. It's the same for me - a big yes or a big no. Nothing at all in-between.

Ugh! I get no celery! No spices! No nothing, it seems. The top notes are the best, and then, it's just sweet burnt sugar. Wrote a review today, too. I so wanted to love this!

Trinity, it's not like Chene to me. I don't remember Arabie, but it seems very different than the SLs I've smelled. My friend says the strange top notes burn off quickly for her then she gets a nice incensey note.

So many opinions,viewpoints...

I hope, against hope that it will meet expectations [unfortunately, rather high, in spite of loving cautions from you good folk!]

Not that I need to impoverish myself further, perfume junkie-whore that I am [refinement notwithstanding...]-

LOL Chaya!! Sometimes it is a relief not to love something! Expecially if it is expensive!

Does not sound like a scent I would like but i am a chypre fan.
Victoria, how does it ride in the heat you are having? I think I would feel a touch "ill".

Thanks for the review Vic! I do love me some Serge and incensy things so I think I'll go head to head with that celery, troll Ebay for a decant, and see what comes of it. :)

GAH! Not the celery! There's nothing more infuriating than that effect... Strange is it not? Other green notes = good, but celery = bad!
